The journal 21: Inquiries into Art, History, and the Visual — Beiträge zur Kunstgeschichte und visuellen Kultur was launched in September 2019 with the aim of establishing a new forum for art history. This forum embraces the full range of diverse objects, questions, and methodologies that comprise and enrich the discipline. The journal is published both as print-on-demand and as an open-access-e-journal, making it freely accessible to the widest audience. The editors (Beate Fricke, Ursula Frohne, Karen Lang, Karin Leonhard, Avinoam Shalem and Michael F. Zimmermann) asked Kaj to develop the visual concept for the magazine.

Inspired by early venetian bookmaking, especially the books made in the printing house of Nicolas Jenson, a full type family with extended language-support in collaboration with Malte Bentzen was developed and used throughout the whole magazine.
